Liner Notes

Nyxie:
Okay, so many of you have already listened to @alyxanderjames 's beautiful song.
They have written a few songs this year that have started to overwrite some of the toxic messaging I received growing up in fundamentalist evangelical spaces.
The idea of being sung home clinched it for me, and I reached out asking if I could fulfill the promise I heard in the song of community, and community healing. I didn't want to change any lyrics, melodies or anything, I just wanted to include the voices I could feel wanted to be a part of this work.
Recording this ended up being very healing for me as well. I don't challenge visual gender norms at all in my personal life, and I don't live in a space where I feel safe to "come out" as agender or ask people to use my preferred pronouns. (Yay, FAWM IS one of those spaces and I'm so grateful for y'all.) At some point my inner ear was like, um, what about the low, growly voices?
Now, I have never sung low on purpose, or gotten much joy out of it. Musically my absorbed binary function of gender was all about being a soprano. But singing those tenor notes was PURE JOY!
Alyx:
I have loved Nyxie’s magical harmonies since our paths crossed last FAWM, so when they reached out asking if they could add some to “Sing Us Home,” I was thrilled! And they absolutely knocked it out of the park - this rendition is even better than what I’d envisioned as I was writing it. They really brought the song to life and I’m just delighted by it!

Lyrics

We welcome rest (we welcome rest)
Take a breath (take a breath)
Sing us home (sing us home)
Sing us home

We welcome rest (we welcome rest)
Take a breath (take a breath)
Sing us home (sing us home)
Sing us home

We may be afraid
But there is strength in numbers
Even when those numbers seem impossibly small
We are not alone
We're all in this together
Finding freedom means freedom for all

We welcome rest (we welcome rest)
Take a breath (take a breath)
Sing us home (sing us home)
Sing us home

We welcome rest (we welcome rest)
Take a breath (take a breath)
Sing us home (sing us home)
Sing us home

Oh, how wonderful! There’s room for more harmonies—I was singing along.

The chorus is an absolute mantra for the times ahead. It's great to hear a chorus of harmonies - there IS strength in numbers. Beautiful, y'all!

Yup this is a nice add to a lovely meaningful song! It sort of feels right for you to add to it! It’s about not being alone! I reckon you should get lots more fawmers to add to this! A great anthem.

So powerful. All the different vocal parts really emphasize that freedom, belonging and acceptance is for everyone, everywhere. Just wonderful.

So beautiful -- in lyrics, melody, and presentation. (It definitely benefits from harmony/choral responses.) I love "But there is strength in numbers/Even when those numbers seem impossibly small" and that whole stanza. This is something I needed to hear today.

Exactly what @the3queens said. With the harmony and more voices this sounds like something I TOTALLY would have heard in the UU Church i belonged to for so long.

It's just wonderful.

On an aside from the song and speaking of gender, gender norms and how we present to the world. I'm an enby but navigate the world *very* girly. Early in transition I learned that much of this was because I wanted be as far away from being associated with men as possible.

But then come trans masc enbies and trans dudes... they are redefining masculinity in such a way that is leaving behind the toxic aspects and I LOVE it! Alyx is one of those people. They were one of the very first if not THE first person to interact with me here and I was SO grateful to this wonderful human for being so kind to me. Thanks Alyx. Much love to you my friend.

I could totally hear this at church or a funeral. I know that sounds bizarre, but I play at a church so do this often.
