I'm John (he/him) and I love collaborations! Please comment below FIRST and follow up with an email using the link in my profile if you'd like to get connected. That should ensure that I don't miss it!

I'm a singer/songwriter living and performing in Minneapolis. My primary instrument is guitar (electric or acoustic), but I can also provide bass, vocals, mixing, and general songwriting. I'm fortunate to play in a local band and collaborate with other local musicians to write, record, and produce original music. I'm heavily influenced by #90s alternative rock since it's what I "grew up on". I'm not sure if I'm stuck in it, or it's stuck in me, but it definitely pervades much of what I create.

I've had a FAWM account since 2013 but have ended up skipping many years due to another time-consuming passion: filmmaking. FAWM 2022 was very successful for me and I'm looking forward to this one as well.

During FAWM 2022 I had a hand in 15 songs, which was so much fun. Some of those are linked in my profile above. I also had a personal challenge to use every one of my guitars (and failed). If you and I work together on something, I'm happy to let you choose which guitar I use. Here's a link to a photo album of them in case one provides inspiration: https://photos.app.goo.gl/YVGMuxuR8PqD4bzy5

Let's rock!

Hi John. Thanks for your comments on "I Thought I Had a Plan." Yes, I take it that what my co-writer and I wrote about is a common situation., especially for retirees like myself Thanks for mentioning that site for task help. Unless people need help writing songs, I might not have much to offer as a "tasker" but might be happy to call on someone with more commonly-needed skills. 😀
[avatar]
@nadine
Now I know what your instrumental break reminds me of: RHCP Californication!
[avatar]
Wow, a chameleon who does flips?! Multi-talented!
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind words on "In Your Heart." Yes, my February was definitely improved. In fact, I'm looking forward to next February, not a sentence I've ever said before.
[avatar]
@nadine - yes! This is my best FAWM yet in terms of output and has some great stuff. I am trying to sneak in a slothcore but I've been....slow.
[avatar]
@nadine
Whaaaaat you're still writing songs 🤯 Very productive😄
[avatar]
@newukenewyork - you bought the jumbo candle this year! I'm hopeful that you'll get to at least take a nap sometime in June - you deserve it!
[avatar]
I told my kid I stayed up late writing 4 more drafts for him and he did NOT act impressed enough. Also I'm supposed to sing this Sunday and I thought, "Should I write a new song for that?" and just couldn't. I think I burned my candle a bit short! ;)
[avatar]
@nadine
Hahah! Well we got 2 more collabs running, no need to sneak more in 😉 Let's get them done after we rested a bit.
[avatar]
@nadine - I was hoping we could sneak one more in, come on! You deserve a rest, for sure, even just because you had to work with me so much, ha!
[avatar]
@nadine
Well double tracking doesn't work well, but what about a Nashville tuning for bass? Does this exist 🤔
I'm uploading our collab to YouTube. Then I'm definately done with FAWM. No mixing, just listening to song and chill for a couple of days. This year will be super busy with music!
[avatar]
@nadine - I mean, I do have TWO basses, so we can just double-track them? That sounds like a lot of work! Let's rest for a few days, shall we! (starting on Wednesday)
[avatar]
@nadine
I'm glad you enjoyed "No Time For Blues". Couldn't resist the pun for this being my last song. I wanna see your blues face someday! Ok, seems like I gonna spend all my points of karma to get my song done.
Actually, why is this instrument called "Double Bass" in English? In German, it's Kontrabass, so basically the contra octave bass. This confused me a lot last year.
[avatar]
Ha! Neat trick. I believe you’re human now.
[avatar]
@newukenewyork - can a replicant do THIS?
[avatar]
One must always consider they may be a replicant, right?
[avatar]
Actually, in "Blade Runner Blue," all Twin Peaks references are subconscious on my part (or Blade Runner references on the part of David Lynch and company!) -- most of the lyrics are quotes or paraphrases from the film.
[avatar]
@sph
Wow, John you're involved in a lot of songs! Enjoyed the rocking video.
[avatar]
@nadine
Congrats for winning FAWM! I enjoyed your take on my lyrics. But how dare could you tune up a bass that is made for low tunings? That's heavier than heavy 🤣
[avatar]
@beacon
Great! I have six other collabs to finish!
[avatar]
@beacon - I'm a winner! I vote we do, just so we aren't driving ourselves mad(der). Some people even write songs in March and April, strangely enough! 😀
[avatar]
@beacon
Congrats on 14! We need to decide if we're going to push our got for 50/90.
[avatar]
Hi @jlampson! I like what you did with Caitlin's song and was wondering if you could help me with a couple of mine. I'll email you!
[avatar]
A thing about me: I will make a Twin Peaks reference whenever possible.
[avatar]
Thanks for returning to "Flaco the Eurasian Eagle Owl!"
[avatar]
@arthurrossi - it's in your email! As I was reading the lyrics, I had to hurry to get a guitar and voice recorder nearby because I immediately heard the song I thought it should be - a good problem to have. Have a great day!
[avatar]
Hey! Finally I came home from work, had a coffee and now I also had the chance to listen to the beautiful song that you made for "No limits". I like the lyrical tweaks you did and the melody is fabulous... Great tune with a catchy chorus, lovely video and awesome performance! I LOVE how this song turned out, thank you very, very much!!!
By the way, may I ask you for a favour? It is not urgent, but if/when you have a chance to record an mp3-file, could you, please, be so kind to send it on my email? I would love to keep it also for a much longer time than this FAWM, it is such a gorgeous song! Once again, thank you so much for all!
[avatar]
Hey! Thank you very much for your message and your email... I sent you an email, too :-)
[avatar]
Bro! Thank you for helping me win FAWM! You’re almost there, buddy! We’ll have to get another one in together!
[avatar]
@nadine
It looks awesome 😍 But I guess I have to teleport myself to a bigger studio first...
[avatar]
@nadine - hardware amps, for sure! Well, just the one, really, a Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister Deluxe 20. I wish I could just teleport some things to you anytime you needed them!
[avatar]
@nadine
Man, I'm sitting here mixing your guitars for 3 days. Do you use hardware amps? This would explain a lot...
Maybe just send me some of your axes and fuzz machines, so I can bother my neighbours 😈🤘
My ears need a rest...
[avatar]
@nadine - ha, that's great! But you don't have to use them all, but they're all awesome, too. QUANDARY! DILEMMA!
[avatar]
@nadine
John! I know why guitars are called axes! You're killing me!!!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on "Flaco the Eurasian Eagle Owl." I wish I had more time! I want to put music on this one immediately but I need to listen to a few more sea shanties first. ;)
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind reply. I look forward to collaborating with you in the future!! Keep rocking this FAWM!
[avatar]
@beacon
John, I haven't forgotten about you. Had a few thing going on and too many collabs. Trying to get a bunch of things out of the way and will have time this weekend to think about what to write for the Hero's Journey!
[avatar]
Hello! Our Valentine's Day hearts match! Wanna collab? Personally, I have until 5pm central and then have plans with my sweetie. I was thinking of writing some lyrics about being beheaded by Romans for Valentine's Day. Would that interest you musically?

Hit me up at BradLBrubaker (at) gmail (dot) com
[avatar]
I haven’t collab’d before but I’d like to try — I have zero multitracking/mixing skills at this point I could try to put lyrics over something you’ve written or if you have something with lyrics that needs harmonies and ukulele I could try to work that out. Open to suggestions!
[avatar]
Thank you for the continued support! :) I'm enjoying your stuff so much, too!
[avatar]
Hey, saw in your profile that you love collabs and I love the way you play guitar. I mainly only play acoustic and I'm kind of stuck in one place musically. I want to learn how to write and sing for rock songs. Would you be interested in writing a rock instrumental that I could topline as a collab?
[avatar]
@newukenewyork - thank you so much for the song, and for - like me - subliminally injecting deeper meaning into something that might otherwise seem frivolous. So much fun to get a sense of other people through their music!

P.S. But I guess that means that if you met them in person you might hate them, soooooooo.....yeah.
[avatar]
I really appreciated your comment on "You Give Good Text" -- for such a silly song, I think you've pulled out what's important to me. even a stinker of a connection might have something good/fun you can take away. ;)
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out Glimpse! Nadine crafts such engaging music that working on the vocals / lyrics is a great pleasure, and I'm glad you liked it!
[avatar]
'It's easy for me to hear this being a song by one of several bands at the upcoming Nu Metal Madness Tour'.

Do not threaten me with a good time, sir 😀

(Also, thank you so much for the comment 😂).
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks for your comment on "Glimpse"! I'm glad you enjoyed the song the same way we did. Yes, there is some guitar layering here. But for some reason I miss something in the very low end, but I couldn't program. Seems like this song needs some real bass, something smooth and dynamic.
[avatar]
@miga
Thanks for listening and commenting on 'metronome'! And no, I didn't/couldn't use a metronome to record it (and I can tell, lol).
[avatar]
@jeff9
Thank you for taking a listen to "Closing Time Is Closing In". I can't take much credit for the pedal steel--it's cobbled together from fragments available in Band In a Box.
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your comment on "Devils on the Trampolines of Hell!" I appreciate it. I might tweak some of the language but am really happy with how this one emerged. And I'm delighted if I show versatility as a player. :)
[avatar]
@nadine - being without electricity like that is one of my least-favorite things! I guess if I'm going camping and it's planned it's all good, but how will I record my amazing new song otherwise! I'll need a little foot-powered generator so I pedal and play at the same time or something!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks for your kind words, John! Yesterday, I was super lucky to have an acoustic guitar, because NOTHING worked and my smartphone has been empty, too. I'm lucky that electricity has been back after 3 hours, but I wonder what I should do when it's lasting for days. No computer. No internet. No smartphone. No tea or meal. Only me and my guitar. PANIC! Playing the blues calms me down for some weird reason.
[avatar]
Well, that was cool - I just skirmished with myself using the title "The Oak Ridge Boys and the Indigo Girls" I'll email you my draft. If it moved you, I would be so excited to have you make something out of it.
[avatar]
Oh heyyyy, did I just hear someone say reach out to do a collaboration on some lo-fi indie rock? Where do I sign up?
[avatar]
Ohhh you gave me such a lovely confidence boost today with your kind, thoughtful comments on my songs! “Thank you, it’s true,” she says, blushing and awkward!
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind words on "He's Hot For Her." Might have taken two takes. ;)
[avatar]
Hi John,
We have a random collab. How do you want to play this? I also play guitar (mostly electric) and a bit of bass. I don’t sing. Thanks. Simon
[avatar]
Thanks for the feedback on With Salt In My Eyes! I am new to doing 3/4 or 6/8 timings so still can’t work it out!! I will deffo develop that song at some point!
[avatar]
Thank you for the listen and comment on Let Go. Much appreciated.
[avatar]
Hey, John - YES. YES. YES. You can skirmish when and where you want to. Definitely post what you do and tag it with the tags, so we can find it and listen. TAGS: #songskirmish, #S020323, #fawmshow #kleptomaniac

@cblack
Ha, yes! Wind beneath my wings was a thing there. 😜 Glad you enjoyed it.
[avatar]
Thank you for for your loquacious comment 12 Words. :) I posted a video today if you want to hear how it turned out!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks a lot for your comment on Princess! Haha this came from my deepest inside!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your kind comment! Much appreciated!
[avatar]
@beacon
John, just responded to your email. Check it out and thanks!
[avatar]
@sph
Hi, we're teamed up in the Video Collaboration Challenge. I will write you a mail where we can discuss with the others how to proceed.
[avatar]
I mean, one can never have enough headphone hangers! 😆
[avatar]
Hi, John! I had posted the link to the cup holder in the studio photo thread, I tagged you there so you can see it. 🙂

Have an amazing FAWM!
[avatar]
@nadine
Yay 🥳 I started this topic 10 years ago and it's still hard for me to write a song in a specific mode. I cannot force, it just happens.
[avatar]
@nadine
If you take a deeper look into "Waiting for a train", you'll notice that it's mixolydian. No voodoo here :)
[avatar]
Thank you - glad to see you are back! I look forward to listening to your creations. Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
@ericalbert made me blush - just a bit. That flattery means we're going to collaborate so I guess it worked, ha!
[avatar]
Thanks for your Studio One tips. And I can't wait to hear more of your music. Just listened to "May/October" and loved it: your voice, the guitar sound, the mix, the rise and fall, the harmonies, the acoustic / electric switches, the casual/cool vibe with the underpinning of hurt. And the tossed off "didn't hit you, though" -- just great! I'd love to collaborate on something -- let me know what you could use. I'm brand new to FAWM and haven't yet learned how this collaboration thing can go.
[avatar]
Hi, John. Wishing you a very happy FAWM. I too love collaborations. Maybe we collaborate on something if you are happy to.
[avatar]
@gm7
Thx John...we will have some fun in Feb!
[avatar]
@phylo
Thanks John. I will reach out when I get stuck. Two bald heads are definitely better than one! You're now on my watchlist!
[avatar]
Happy FAWM, John!! It was so lovely to *meet* you during FAWMstock! I hope you have loads of inspiration for both music and your filmmaking.
[avatar]
@datsch
I think you should play all the Cs on the red Fly, all the C#s on the Steinberger, and so on -- looks like you've got about three octaves' worth ... 😂
[avatar]
@gm7
Welcome! This is your 14th FAWM...cool
[avatar]
@nadine
It may be a GRAND idea to try some harpsiCHORDs. Let's do the 4track. I don't want to start another collab as we still have some running.
[avatar]
@nadine
Sure you can start the chain. I have to miss out the first week because of my exam.
[avatar]
@nadine
Welcome back! Your profile picture looks like... you should try somethin with keys. WIll you?
[avatar]
Welcome back John! Good to see you here again!
