Stool Pigeon

Liner Notes

Apologies for the rough and ready vocals and mixing (blame a heavy cold for at least one of those). I appreciate it's a bit obscure but it's sort of thinking about the nature of time as a way of categorising women (see: virgin/mother/crone archetypes) and how we are expected to grapple with that and as such we can't ever escape it. Something like that anyway. It's a first song leave me alone hehe.

Lyrics

I’m dreaming again of clocks
This one is so vast
Its huge face sits on a long horizon
Giant hands plunge into the fog

I know what I know
The stern from the bow

That’s why I think it’s better
Oh so much better
To be the pigeon
And not the stool

This body’s not a clock
I feel out of my surroundings
These letters I trace
Draw lines not from age
What good’s a doctrine without shock?

I know what I know
The Dali from the Poe

You're not a stool

Love it. Beautiful vocal.

I just love the driving synth and the great structure! Your vocals are lovely and the contrast of pacing with the music is very nice. I really dig this song!

I love this, it's what I've been waiting for from you since last Feb. Classic songwriting with a busy and quite buzzy arrangement. There is something quite odd going on with the mix so I'd be very keen to here this as if I'm in the room and not listening through a keyhole. I want to hear everything cos it's full of cool instrumentation and ideas.

So great to hear you're back at it again Anya. This one knocks the socks off. You've packed so many catchy and quirky ideas into a teeny tiny package, all intricately woven as you always do so well. Particularly loving the higher register vocals. Super solid start!

Gloriously surreal! I love all those twists and turns.

This is a rocking song. I like the imagery you have. I saw the giant hands of the clock plunging my way as I listened to your vocals.

This is ace! Love the electro instrumentation that just pulses along. As others have already said, the vocals are particularly great! Lyrics worthy of multiple reads as always with your stuff. Great start 😊

Great stuff, no idea how you can hit those high notes with a cold but it's very impressive! Love the fizzy, pulsating keys (I nearly said "pulsating organ" but that seems like getting into dangerous territory on a song about massive clocks).

Oooo yeah, that pulsing rhythm is so propelling. Errr, the vocals are bloody brilliant you IDIOT. The melodic leaps are so enthralling and hooky - it's so pop. Some cool and quirky synth patches throughout this, as we've come to expect.

this is ace, love that pulsing synth and lyrics superb as always - that first verse in particular is really evocative. The shift around 1:20 is great, love all the different synth sounds and subtle guitar coming in for that section. Vocals sound good to me, love the leap up for "I know what I know" especially.

Digging the bounce of the track. If The Police used more synths than guitars, it might sound like this. The clock images were my favorite in the tune.

Oooo, I love this! You sound great, cold or no. The lyrics are exquisite, and the soundscape is delicious. "What good's a doctrine without shock?" really hit just right!

WOW wow wow wow, Anya!! What a song. This is incredible. Your voice sounds quite good for being sick! I am so inspired by the sonic landscapes you explored with this. And your poetry--utterly delicious! Thank you for writing and sharing this. I hope you keep going with it!

I really like that very brief change to 6/8 in the chorus. Had me rewinding as I wasn’t sure if I was going crazy

With no good reason to provide as to why, that is just a great opening line. I really like the "I know what I know" section. Lost ending technique in action here?
