Liner Notes

In his song Starting Gate (https://write.fawm.org/songs/304044) a couple days ago, @thinkalto included the signature line "One Take Is All It Takes" as a homage to @ductapeguy on the occasion of his retirement. I commented that that phrase felt like a whole philosophy of life, and it felt like it needed at least one song of its own. So here's my contribution.

Lyrics

One take is all it takes
-- That’s a good thing
One take is all it takes
So come on let’s all sing

We get one take for piano
We get one take for guitar
We get one take for practicing
And learning who we are

One take is all it takes
-- That’s a good thing
One take is all it takes
So come on let’s all sing

We get one take to listen
We get one take to love
We get one take to go after
The dreams we’re dreaming of

One take is all it takes
-- That’s a good thing
One take is all it takes
So come on let’s all sing

We get one take for asking
We get one take to give
We get one take for breathing
We’ve got one take left to live

One take is all it takes
-- That’s a good thing
One take is all it takes
So come on let’s all sing
Yeah, Let’s take this take to sing

One take is all it takes
-- That’s a good thing
One take is all it takes
So come on, come on, come on,
let’s all sing

Very nice sweet vocal. I like the theme and the gentle melody. We all have One chance and you bring that in well.

I was going to point out my favorite verses, but I love them all! Very well written, and the rhythm just pours out! Fun song! Nice to see you here again!

Great FAWM song! Really catchy, I think the vocal melody will be stuck in my head for days. I've said it on previous songs of yours', but your voice is absolutely incredible.

I'm gonna keep this in mind for advice to not be a perfectionist in life...maybe that will help me! nice message here.

Love the country, folky vibes - what a great write! I love how you’ve taken the “one take” theme and started with the meta (songwriting) and then move into more existential themes. This is definitely an earworm in the best way!

Truly captures an old timey sing along here. The idea of a 'one take' brings a spiritual essence to the theme but at the time it sounds grounded in a life lived in that regard, so comes out so natural. I feeling a fiddle solo on this one, and dancing too. Dig it.

I can hear a whole group of people singing this together around a campfire. It has such a lovely feel of Old Folk from the 60s to it. Breezy and yet meaningful.

Nancy! killer write! Love it! Really diggin' the repetition driving the ideas home! At work atm and can't listen... I'm sure you knocked it out of the park on the first take! Will do so later this evening!

I've posted a couple of lyrics thinking of you :-) - Wasn't sure what your recording/collab schedule was like!

Things are great in Boston, We've a bit of snow, had some frigid cold snaps but that's how winter goes! Hope you're staying warm, happy and healthy!!

What a lovely, catchy tune! And a great message that we all have one chance at this life. You have a sweet voice. Thank you, by the way, for your comments on my "Daddy My Daddy" lyrics.

This is such a sweet uplifting melody, which is good, cus the lyrics are deceptively dark I think. Love the way you've extended the literal songwriting point into a metaphor for life. Super cute performance as well, there's something so appealing about the light way you sang this. And we agree with @massnerdy , it'd be so lovely with a whole gang of folks singing the chorus 😀

I was just showing my youngest some Woodie Guthrie tunes that we used to listen to when they were little, and this really captures some of that same simplicity/universality that hits deeply. I really dig that the theme is a whole double entendre that hits on recording and life. I dig it as a FAWMer and a human! I would love to hear this with a chorus of folks singing along live! Beautifully done!

This is so dang good!! Great melody, great guitar work. Awesome lyrics, so catchy!! One take!!! Love your voice!!! Love that slight southern drawl I think I hear in there!!! Really enjoyed this listen!
[avatar]
Excellent! Great philosophy. The repetition of the chorus ties this all together nicely. It's official! You are back!

I get strong John prine vibes. Joyful writing - as others have said, it's very affirming. I especially like the second refrain with the "one take for asking / one take to give." And your playing/ singing sound great! I

Ah yes, a delightful, life-affirming song delivered sweetly. Very nice indeed!
[avatar]
Love to hear you sing. This is inspirational and catchy. I definitely sang along. One take, yeah, so true
[avatar]
This is so positive and uplifting. Feels like a campfire song with everyone singing along. This is the perfect start to my day! Thanks :)
[avatar]
Such a nice relaxed vocal delivery Nancy. All set to some perfectly in time strumming. Well done!
[avatar]
I love the cheeriness of this song, Nancy. Your voice and guitar have a cool, warmth that made me want to play along (so I did). I like that you made a song about a song, that is also a about living a life. :)
[avatar]
Great songwriting hymn! Isn't it basically a song about FAWM? And then you expand the topic. Great write and catchy
[avatar]
Great job, Nancy! The hook, right up front. Then you make that hook pay off the rest of the song with a simple, catchy melody and lyrics that keep enhancing. Way to go!
[avatar]
This is a wonderful FAWM song - it is engaging and inviting! I love the melody and your delivery! It is a great reminder!
[avatar]
I really like where it starts and where it ends up - Fawm is life, life is FAWM. Once again, your delivery is spot on, that's a husky country voice going on there. The lyrics are so confident and quietly clever
[avatar]
What a great concept to write a song about. I love how you transition from the "one take" music specifics, and the broader lessons to draw -- and then how the takes keep getting emotionally deeper. I love the simple strong structure and where that lets you go. This is great!
[avatar]
Nice sing a long song. I found myself joining in, happy and upbeat. Love the line we got one take left to live.
[avatar]
Nice work. Great guitar. Your vocals are good. I enjoyed the lyrics.
[avatar]
I love the melody and lyrics. I feel like this is a great singalong song!
[avatar]
Awww, what a sweety of a song! I was thinking the same as others before I read the comments, perfect sing-along campfire song. This is perfect as-is but it would be fun to add tracks of other people singing along with the chorus. Excellent tune & general philosophy for life, music, and... everything!
[avatar]
So much fun! There aren't many solo performances out there that are so inviting to others to join in, but this one nails it!
[avatar]
Toe tapping, great singalong here. Love the melody and progression, as said by others, captures the spirit of FAWM to a T. Nice stuff!
[avatar]
You captured the spirit of FAWM! And, like you say, a reminder that this lesson applies to life not just songwriting. This is charming.
[avatar]
Dang! We've been repeating the duct tape mantra in slack quite a bit and now we have a song to embody it and you did it just right. I wanted to sing along right from the top. You nailed it.
[avatar]
This should be a FAWM mantra (for me)!
I love this song with its wise simplicity!
And your voice sounds so calm - very lovely!
[avatar]
this is a terrific campfire song. or a singalong next time you hit the ramshackle. i really liked it and couldnt help but sing along on it with you and without you knowing it.
[avatar]
