The Moon Saw Everything

Skirmish: Throwback Thursday - Old ... (@dudachris)

Liner Notes

FAWM 2025 / Song 8

Loved this skirmish prompt to finish something unfinished, but I was walking home from school drop off when I spotted it, and it had already started.

In FAWM 50/90 last summer, I wrote a lyric draft quickly on the subway that never got a melody or chords but I really liked how it turned out -- so I ran home to the second half of this skirmish to figure those out. Took me a few extra minutes to get a rough demo posted.

Here's what I said about the lyrics in September: Looking in my notebook for some unused lines to swap, I ran across a few lines that suddenly sparked a short lyric -- even though I KNOW I write too many songs about the moon. ;)

I'm losing my voice and there are a few chords/melody spots I want to change, but overall I'm pretty happy with how it's coming along.

Lyrics

I took my shadow to the shade so we could be together
I hummed a song to soothe it as the sun went down
The night settled around me but it wasn’t dark
The stars swam by like goldfish and the sky was round

And the moon saw everything...
It saw you haunting me
It saw me wanting you
It saw that we could never be
And the moon knew every thought
That flickered in my closing eyes
It saw me try love on for size
And knew it wouldn’t fit me right
The moon saw everything,
Rising that night

I slept awhile, I had a dream, inside that silver screen
I woke to find it fleeing as the dawn crept in
The grass shimmered like I’d lost you but it wasn’t tears
The morning dew was all there was to wake up to again

And the moon saw everything...
It saw you haunting me
It saw me wanting you
It saw that we could never be
And the moon knew every thought
That flickered in my closing eyes
It saw me try love on for size
And knew it wouldn’t fit me right
The moon saw everything,
Slipping from sight

Feels like it could have been out of Breakfast At Tiffany’s. Love this. You are an alliteration queen! Feels so timeless

This is great. Your lyrics are full of interesting ideas (taking your shadow to the shade and soothing it as the sun goes down is an amazing thought) and none of the details of the relationship are quite spelled out which I think adds a universality to the whole thing, as well as an air of mystery. Your melody is sweet and fits the words perfectly. And, your performance is so laid back, really great work.

Oh this is incredible. It seems like it should already have been a classic recorded by dozens of singers over the last 50 years, but you just came up with it this month (and last summer)

Really pretty tune and melody. Lyrically, you had me at “ I took my shadow to the shade“. That is such a brilliant opening line. Well done!

Really like the jazzy chords and floating melody and the line "the moon saw everything" shines out of the melody and sets up the rest. I was joining in towards the end! Amazing what a uke, a lovely voice and a sweet melody can do. Enjoyed that!

I came here for the title. Really nice dissonant chords you rock back and forth on in the intro and outro. I really like the slow pace, the really pretty melody, and the gentle vocals that just float so beautifully above the uke. Lovely poetic lyrics. There are never enough songs about the moon.

I've written a "lot" of "moon songs"--but generally in the summer. Haven't been paying attention lately (although I DID notice we had a full moon a few days ago--but then the weather got crummy). This is one of your best ever, methinks. Lovely tune and particularly nice vocal on this one! ❤️

I'm really taken by the chorus. And the moon as the objective perspective. -char

lovely chill feel to this! very comfortable song, lifted more by some cool lines , none better than " the stars swam by..........

Your voice has such a lovely, sweet tone, just perfect for this gorgeously wistful lyric. I could listen to this over and over and over.

I saw the title on the sidebar and I was like "it's about the moon, I bet it's @newukenewyork" haha. Love those chords, and the bouncy melody fits right in there. This definitely feels like it should be a ukulele standard. "It saw me try love on for size/ And knew it wouldn't fit me right" is a great line and the chord change underneath is perfect.

Love this!
I am glad you finished this song. A bit of a “Standards” feel - I imagined it as movie soundtrack
Nice playing - vocals and music melded well with the lyrics. 👏🏻 👏🏻

Oh! Forgot to ask but what is a pineapple ukulele? just a uke made to look like pineapple or does it have some unique qualities beyond that?

I really liked this concept of the moon seeing everything. It has something profoundly mysterious to it. At least for me. This has makings of a great song. The melody is ethereal especially in the chorus.

The chorus reminded me of a special moment in my life. No need to go into details, but gosh - what a moment then. Love your delivery. Your vocal is a joy!

I love songs about the moon, and yours is really beautiful! Of course the moon sees everything, always!
The beautiful nocturnal imagery in your lyrics speaks to me, and what a gorgeous vocal rendition of that poetic story! Great work!

Read them earlier and listening now... WoW... what a voice... your singing and performance just take me away... This is so beautiful love the tempo/meter, wonderful top line and the lyrics put the bow on the whole package... Love it!

Quite nice for the moon to have a shot as the lyrical subject position, rather than its usual home as the object of poetry. This is really lovely, and your voice as always sounds so pretty. This gentle personification of nature makes me think of cultures in which the land has its own wisdom that you can draw from, if you’re minded to listen.

Wow. Terrific songwriting and singing, Looks like you're having a very productive FAWM. And thanks for the nice feedback on "Millibar."

Fantastic performance, really enjoy watching you play and sing, gorgeous dreamy song
[avatar]
ohhh this is so lovely <3
[avatar]
Nice throwback vibe to go with the prompt! Lovely chords and vocal phrasing.
[avatar]
This is easy to listen to. I enjoy the personification of the moon too. Thanks for this 🙏

Love that first line! This is just soooo catchy and the combination of your voice and the use make me smile from ear to ear. Lovely stuff, just great!
[avatar]
Never too many songs about the moon! You’re such a solid songwriter. The moon does see everything, it’s even up there lurking in the daytime sky.
[avatar]
What a great breezy vibe! It had me dreaming of spring. The omniscient moon is a nice touch in the story.
[avatar]
Such a lovely song. Your voice and ukulele are a match made in heaven.

And idea for that first line, I would have wrote it as "I took my shadow to the shade so we could be *one*". The rhyme would work a touch better and in my head it makes a bit more sense. Just a creative input!

Your lyrics are killer but the performance and the music just slays me. This one works SO perfectly as a girl-with-uke. "It saw my try love on for size and knew it wouldn't fit me right" UGH IM DYING. and the chord choices there emphasize it so well. Can't wait to hear it when you have more practice minutes and a better-feeling-voice under it :)
[avatar]
Wow! that was gorgeous! What a beautiful lyric and melody. It's got a real nostalgia vibe too. Conjuring images of the early 20th century, by a river, in a park, tall trees, springtime...
[avatar]
At work and can't listen, but love the lyrics - I don't know what it is but love writing about th emoon, stars and night sky - wonderful story and descriptions... Can't wait to hear it!
