Hey, It’s From Me (It’s Not About the Moon)

Liner Notes

FAWM 2025 / Song 1
Cheese in the skirmish prompt made me think of the “moon is made of cheese” myth, and also the “cheesy love song” genre. And I love cheese and the moon and cheesy declarations of love. And then I thought about how I’ve written too many lyrics about the moon and stars — and I wrote another one.

instrument: koa soprano ukulele tuned high GCEA

Edited to add: just realized I've "done" this bridge melody before -- the first few lines are very similar to another song I wrote. So I'll definitely be revising that!

Lyrics

V1
It’s not about the moon, if it looks that way
Your face as bright, I don’t dare look on
It’s not that it’s spring, but I heard a bluebird say
I could hide it in a song

And if I sing it right
It’s here in plain sight

Dress it in poetry
Wrap it in levity
Maybe you’ll know it’s from me
Something subjectively
Slightly excessively
Say that you know it’s from me
Hey, it’s from me

V2

It’s not about the stars, though I mention them
The sky’s just a safer place to gaze
And it’s not out in space, but, oh, I just can’t win
If you walk away

And if I stay in tune
Something might bloom

BRIDGE
So many songs about the moon
Truly impressive piles of cheese
With rhyming ends and nights in June
A thousand ways to ask you, tell you, please
Please…be mine
And if you’re mine today
Then say you’ll stay…

I'll dress it in poetry
Wrap it in levity
Maybe you’ll know it’s from me
Something subjectively
Slightly obsessively (accidental lyric change; might keep)
Say that you know it’s from me
Hey, it’s from me

Say that you know it’s from me
Hey, it’s from me

I love the brightness of this ! "If i stay in tune, something might bloom" is my favorite ! Listening to this, it feels like we're already in spring :) Are we sure it's february ?

What a gorgeous wander.

bright and brilliant with a croocked smile : I saw the moon tonight and it was just like your song !

Oh, this is charming! I can see this bringing a room to a quiet, respectful silence with a small crowd looking on, with some gently snapping their fingers, and others gently swaying and breaking into dance.
[avatar]
Brilliant!

Awww a valentine's cheese song !! Not in the least cheesy (see what I did there lol). So sweet and lovely melodies 😀

Very charming both in delivery and execution. I can also hear spaces that can be made for harmonies or overlapping harmonies to be placed atop certain parts of the song. The lackadaisical feel overall makes this song really warm and inviting. Good job!

Aaaah, this is gorgeous! And a skirmish at that! What a brilliant interpretation of the prompt. The cadence of the lyrics and the lilt of the tune are great. I love it!

This brightened my day! This could become a sing-a-long and concert song. Nice start!

Another song to remind me how much I adore your sense of melody. Lovely music!

Such a lovely song. It had a little jaunt to my step when listening to this. I
Really like the line dress it in poetry, wrap it in levity. Really nice work
[avatar]
Wow! This is brilliant! Love that little turnaround leading into the chorus. Your voice is really strong too! Top tune!
[avatar]
Just...wow. First, I've gotta say that I've listened to a fair amount of your stuff in past FAWMs and it seems like your performance confidence has grown tremendously. You have a great voice and you always handled the uke well, but you've taken it up quite a few notches IMHO. That said, you've also constructed (and in an impressively short amount of time) what sounds and reads like a really polished piece of work here that not many of us could do if we worked on it for a month. Really enjoyable--sort of blown away I have to say.

You have such an engaging, personable style I felt sorry when the song ended. I think you could sing about anything and it would sound great, and I did like this "cheesy" love song. Great way to start FAWM!

You...Are...Amazing! I mean, c'mon!!! This is such a beautiful song! And chock full of clever lyrics. Cheesy love song? Perhaps, but a damn fine one (eat your heart out Macca with your Silly Love Song!) Fun lyrics...enticing melody...very well played (you are one of the few people I've ever heard make the ukulele sound so good)...and beautifully sung (I know it is cliche to say but there are angels who could learn from you!) So yeah, you won the @#$* outta this skirmish!

Always like your songs.

Sweet! Already sounds like a classic!

@newukenewyork nice ballad, watched and listened to the whole thing - very magnetic.. also wanted to see if your cat would get up and go.
[avatar]
Great way to sneak in the skirmish prompt between the poetic lines of moon and June - just like a slice of cheese into a sandwich! Nice one
[avatar]
As always I love your lyric style, you have a great wandering way of going about your topics that I find very fun to listen to. Really creative interpretation of the prompt!
[avatar]
Beautiful voice, I like the images and the levity, I like the change to excessively to obsessively it feelsnlike a progressing, my vote would be to keep
[avatar]
Sounds like you had fun with this and it is very smile inducing and sunny. Corking lyric and beautifully delivered. Can't bit of uke! 😃
[avatar]
Utterly gobsmacked! Going from a pile of cheese to a silly love song. Great work!!!

I like the change to the final chorus. I vote for "keep it!" (Not that my vote counts for anything, of course :-)
[avatar]
Love it! Very vibey and funny, but also beautiful. I Really like the speed up with the "subjectively excessively", really funky that way You really make this look easy!
[avatar]
Such a fun song!! It's so great to see you having so much fun singing and playing this one, as well. Wonderful start to FAWM!
[avatar]
