Mr Collie and I recorded a live take of Ah-oohs, leaving space for the verses. He improvised a bit at the end. Then I wrote the rest of the words and fitted them into our live duet.

Lyrics

I’m a border collie and I know my profession
If you try to push me I’ll give you aggression
Show me some love and I’ll give you my affection
Look me in the eye and we’ll make a connection
You can be the sheriff and I’ll be the deputy
And when the day is over we’ll sing a melody -
Ah-ooh

I’m a border collie, I’m a real self-starter
If you think you’re smart, you know that I’m smarter
I can run for miles like I’m practically weightless
Always on the move, but never ever aimless
If you got endurance, well, I can run longer
And when the day is over we’ll sing us a song,
Ah-ooh

I’m a border collie. Do you wanna get to know me?
First I gotta tell you that nothing can slow me
I’ll be your best friend but you better be wary
It’ll be the end of your life sedentary.
I can run all day and you never have to plead or beg,
I can find a lost sheep, bring you back a deer leg.
When the day is over I’ll be lying at your feet,
While you’re playing your guitar and we're singing to the beat:
Ah-ooh

This is sheer brilliance and great fun, I wish I'd written this. My golden retriever is jealous, looking at me, wanting to be a star too. Thanks so much!

Just wanted to let you know that I’m back for my third (or possibly fourth) listen. It puts a smile on my face every time, and I’ve been needing these smiles recently.☺️

An I the only one who was howling along with the chorus? What they all said, with a wag of the tail added in. And I'm going to use the pupcore tag as well, thank you very much!

This is wonderful on every level. Love what you did and of course the way you did it ……It is so endearing hilarious and fun. Fantastic work all around, including, of course, that amazing collie!

I've been told by friends that I'm a border collie, and I relate to this song. Love the solos.

The sparse, wailing music is the perfect foil for the dense, cascading lyrics. The infinite complexity of the mind behind the howling. It could equally be a metaphor for a human mind, or the words our 'best friend' yearn to tell us but never could.

The harmonious howling is reaching me on a level that all-human songs tend not to. Something very primal and animalistic in that. Quite captivating.

Pupcore! Amazing. 😊 “I can find a lost sheep, bring you back a deer leg.” 😆

My family just got our first-ever dog Charlie (a Bichon mix rescue dog) in January and we are loving him, perhaps I’ll have to write my own pupcore song this month.

Awhhh, just so awhhh. Good feelings all around.

Can't believe I never realised I needed pupcore in my life! Love the laidback groove and, of course, the exemplary backing vocals!

So good. Pupcore for the win.

I'm obsessed with this song 😂 He's such a good singer! (And you are too! But I'm sure you knew your backup vocalist was gonna steal the show on this one ;D) The lyric is on point too, reminds me of some border collies I've known. They always want something to DO!

Jon, I love this no end!! I had no doubt of Mr Collie’s musical talent. This really lets him shine (exactly in his key), and, of course, he would be a rapper! The lyrics are clever and delightful; you really summed up what I imagine a border collie’s life to be. I’m a cat gal myself, so we all like to be a bit sedentary over here, but I’ve always thought a dog would be a great way to get built in exercise every day. It’s the perfect duet, and the perfect ode to your furry best friend!

Classic! Harmonic at it's dog gone best. Give Mr. Collier a treat..maybe more!

Oh, that's really lovely! Luckily our cat wasn't in the room at the time 🤣
Mr Collie has a most gorgeous singing voice!

Border collies are such characters. And impressive vocalists, it seems!

This is, quite simply, a delight.

I love this so much- WELL DONE! Our dog "sings" as well, but it never occurred to me to write a song around it! What a cool concept! And Mr Collie is such a good singer! My dogs ears where moving all around as I listened to this one. My fav line is "If you think you’re smart, you know that I’m smarter" SO GOOD! Tell him he's such a good boy!

ha ha this is funnier than most ! it's really well done as well! an of courseci had a border collie as well. loved it

you and your collie harmonize really well, i like the fact that you give him a lot of room and are not just using him to make yourself sound better. i also appreciate you letting him have the verses so listeners can get to know him a little better so we think of him as an individual and not a hired BUV dog. this song has been the most fun ive had at fawm all week lon. thank you.

Definitely not safe for cats! I love this! Thanks for making me laugh and warming my heart! If I had a dog it would be a border collie for sure! ❤️

Jon, I'm catching up on some listening and well... you can't very well post those tags and not expect me to immediately click on this. Now I find myself jutting my head back and forward in that slightly dismissive way they do in the rap videos (I believe) with a huge grin on my face. It's so wonderfully creative. The ah-ooh chorus is such a great climax to the clever, denser verses. Love the panning on the verse vocals, and the way the left emphasises certain words so it's not just a doubled thing. Some tasty little guitar tucked away towards the end! And your border collie is a straight up rock star, clearly. Big career ahead of him, no doubt...
