Liner Notes

I posted a photo in the Slack chat of the collection of #microphones on my desk, describing the plethora of stands and pop shields as my "mic garden".

[...]

Well, *of course* I was going to turn that into a song, wasn't I? Things got rather #meta but it's a #BigProduction as always, heavy on the Fender Jazz #bass.

And yes: the first verse is recorded with an SM58, the second with an SM7B, and the third with a Super 55. Choruses were recorded with my MXL990. Sadly, I think my ten-year-old TC Helicon Mic Mechanic is knackered, as I had to re-do several takes I'd fed through it...

Lyrics

Wandering through my microphone garden with an SM58
Screaming at it 'til my arteries harden will never change its state
Some mics can be cheap and nasty but I'm s(h)ure this one is great
A sonic wonderland is waiting just inside the garden gate

You might keep your distance but that's not the way it goes
Nothing's gonna kick in 'til it's underneath your nose

Crank the gain up; take deep breaths
Push the focus of your voice way down in your chest
Pull your shoulders back, set out to impress
Squeeze your diaphragm and make this take the best

I'm ensconced at the mixing desk with my SM7B
Use it straight and it's much too quiet, and that's not how things should be
Add a FetHead to its signal for the best mixology
Then lean in so you maximise its great proximity!

You want a voice for radio? Then here's a tip for you:
Talking through an SM7B is what you do

I'm standing in the spotlight with a Super 55
It's the mic they'd give to Elvis (if the King was still alive)
As far as legends go, it's one that has survived
And if the sound guy hands you one, you know you have arrived

Whatever mic you use, don't hold it in your hands!
You'll get a better take if you can fix it to a stand

+ 10 points for the photo. What is it about audio recording gear that makes it so worth staring at? Your tunes often bring the funk and this one is no exception. Great groove from start to finish, and your lyrics are a blast. I bought a handful of mics this year and have been somewhat successful over the past few months holding back from further purchases. But I think this song may have contributed to me falling off the wagon (if it didn't just push me off outright). Oh well. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Off to check my Sweetwater wish list....

It's cool how the groove of this is equal parts jaunty and funky! I feel like this should be added to the FAQs on how to record vocals!

Nice ode to the variety of mics and all their uses included!

This is the song the audio nerds wait to hear I think.
Where the love for a woman lyrics replaced by the love for the mic model numbers lyrics!

This is giving me Zappa vibes and I am here for it. Love the sound of your Jazz bass. Nice work!

Ooh the mic meta ness! This is s(h)ure is a lot of fun!

Love that funky bass! And I feel like this is required listening for mic neophytes.

Well done!

Hmmm...maybe I should write a song about my own studio--starting with the dust under my desk. 😉

Great production as always. Very nice job! ❤️

What a great idea for a tune. Love that choppy little funk on the guitar over your big poppa bear bass line. Bonus points for the "s(h)ure" gag.

Educational! and Fun! ...scrolling suddenly on a mic store page...

What ya mean if he is alive! Ha . Very funny, I am wondering what selected mic breeding might get you! Very good one mate!

The meta ness of this is perfect. My singer loves her 58betas but we have both fallen in love with our new ear trumpet Myrtle for outdoor gigs.
Solid funk backing and mixing on this too. A pleasure to listen to on all 3 mics, the Super 55 is pretty cool but 😎

As an audio geek (even if I'm partial to Audix, AT, and the EV RE-20 I need to get recapsuled!) I tip my hat to this track...so much fun!!!! This put a smile on my face. Cool ditty!!!

This cracked me TF up! Great job!

It's like the secret garden of sound!

What a fun and funky bass line driving the song! The different mics are fun.

Oh man, I wish I had headphone with me right now. This is amazing and very meta in the best way! What an incredible idea. Also, I love that the bass tone sounds very Jaco influenced -- I can't help it, I'm a bassist first.
