Liner Notes

I confess I came up with the first two lines and wrote them down as an idea to develop prior to February. A simple simple 4 chord progression. A few guitars in here including the Duolian, Strat and L00. The free Fracture Sounds Blueprint church organ in the background.

Lyrics

Now that love has gone
Back to where it came from
No forwarding address
But maybe that’s for the best

So I must face
What’s left behind in its place
Just more loneliness
That would be my guess

My heart is a deadweight
An anchor I can’t raise

Oh I wish that I could
Shrug off the old neighbourhood
Move on to some new town
But sadness always comes around

So I’ll keep my head down
Out the way of our old common ground
But should I meet your eye
I’ll carry on walking by

My heart is a deadweight
An anchor I can’t raise

You have a knack for writing new songs that sound like we've been listening to them our whole lives. Amazing skill.

Absolutely gorgeous Duolian their, so rich and pure, and great how it fills the vocal gaps. Your voice is reminding me of Cass McCombs a bit in this one. Great hook (or should I say anchor!) in the chorus too.

I really like this! You have a great voice! Really nice melody and vibe! Well done!

This is a really nice song. Sad, wistful, and lovely. I like your vocals and the almost-dreamy echo effect you've added to it. The instrumentation is solid, especially your work on the lead guitar. Has a slight Los Lonely Boys feel to it. Anyway, really enjoyed this.

it has a tex-mex feel but is the arrangement blossoms out from that into something more elegant. vocals are rich and clear.

Such a nice, laidback groove to this track. It feels quite incongruously summer-y, considering the current temperature!
[avatar]
So smooth, that chorus is so fantastic, has a bit of Sonntag vibes -

Oh, this builds so nicely! Love the rest between the sections, they manage to build momentum, and the balance of the voices is excellent. Lots of little guitar touches I'm loving, and the melody is perfect - reminds me of Simon and garfunkel kinda.

you just had to go make that chorus all gorgous 🙄 I was listening to that bassline alot; just cause reasons. I loved it

You bloody cheat!!!!!! Despite your filthy admission, I still really like your song Oddleboddle. It lilts. It certainly lilts. You know I don’t even really know what lilting means but I’m still certain this is it!

Lol @ Peter’s cheater comment, get your own jokes dickwad.

You turned a really memorable phrase into an excellent song. Could become a classic.

You're probably the best arranger I know. You have a knack for throwing a unique set of instruments together and making it sound like the most natural thing on earth. Gorgeous stuff.

Cheater! You really know how to ruin the spirit of FAWM. And I bet you ripped this from a Gordon Lightfoot song. Am I right? Do I win?
[avatar]
Your production and melodic choices are always masterful. The shift to a higher vocal register for the chorus is perfect, feels pulled slightly to the background when you expect it to move to the front, like, say, there's a dead weight dragging you down...

Such a great sound and wonderful vocal. If you only did this song for FAWM it would be a success. Sad and beautiful. Great song!

Wonderful first offering. Very tight lyrically, It appears to be straightforward musically, but you always come up with beautiful and unexpected changes. The chorus with the background oohs is marvelous. Quite the earworm and hook
[avatar]
Oh boy, a really beautiful song. Superb vocals with some great backing vocals, especially as the focus for the chorus. Production is top dollar.

Quite the jump from that rather gothic title to that melodious intro line.

Lyrically, very well-crafted. You speak of a fatal illness (of the human condition, bear with me here) in terms of its symptoms, creating in the process a story which is approachable and relatable without dulling its message, especially to those in the know. This gives it a timeless feel - I could be listening to this in any decade of modern pop music.

There's so much warmth and lustre here, feels like the track's been bathed in gold. The guitar playing is so damn tasteful, the little runs and embellishments work like mini hooks behind the main melody. Beautiful vocal, and even more beautiful BVs. That organ is super subtle but also doing so much in terms of the atmospherics. And those are some really artful lyrics - particularly liked the first two verses. Fine opening track here mate, hugely enjoyed my listen(s).

Aaaahhhhhhhhh……just lovely…..if I don’t look out the window and just listen to your song, it’s a beautifully sunny and warm day. Wonderful song!
[avatar]
There’s a beautiful, timeless feel to this one - from the aabb rhyming scheme to your strong and soulful delivery. I especially enjoyed the last verse and the ‘should I meet your eye I’ll carry on walking by’ - showing how sometimes we must accept, even if we can’t shake off the sadness.

A very pleasant listen. Tex-Mex feel reminds me of my desert upbringing.
[avatar]
Ooh this is so good! It has a Damian Jurado sound that I love!! The guitars are so well played and the simple percussion is superb.
Great lift into the choruses. The oohs are a clever touch.
I hope you’re proud of this. It’s a really good track!

This is beautiful, lush, wistful and so melodic. It's such a pleasure to be bathed in your sound and hear your voice again!!!

This song is so far away from my usually listenign habits, but the production is so ace. Good pace for the lyric, great warm sound. Wow.
[avatar]
Excellent lyrics - simple and to the point is always best, especially when it is done in such a very special way. Love it 😄 ps always love your harmonies
[avatar]
You're so good with arrangements, do you plan ahead or do you lay down vocal/guitar and then sprinkle the oddbod magic as you write? Really nice chorus that's giving me Steve Winwood sort of vibes. Arrangement is perfectly done as always
[avatar]
Smoooooth. Chill vibe, nicely recorded and some tasteful guitar embellishments. Melancholy lyrics alright but expertly crafted…
[avatar]
The delivery of that first line is so perfect. The feel and pacing of the whole song is gorgeous, but the first line just grabbed me. The arrangement for so early in FAWM is astounding also. It’s got a CSN and even a bit of the beach boys feel to it.
[avatar]
Oddbod is a master. I wish I knew your recording secrets. LOL (seriously tho..) Great stuff, as always.
[avatar]
I am on the summer beach in Australia, and the relaxed feeling of this tune is a perfect fit.
[avatar]
Didn’t we all! This is just a beautiful song, sure a sad element but just lovely! So well done!
[avatar]
Lovely stuff. You do this kind of melancholy so well! Guitar work great as ever and the vocal work is right up my street. Nice one to start with today!
[avatar]
Well, first off, yer a cheater. Phew. Glad we got that out of the way.

Ah, the gentle Duolian accents. Percussion is nicely done. And a two-line chorus—I'm liking it.
