Liner Notes

ZeCoop: I am very excited that Bijou was able to collaborate with me again! I've been amazed at the many Bijou skills since one of my songs was transformed in 2013. I wrote this one on my Jazzmaster with some reverse delay and other effects. It came out very quickly and was very fun to build. It also was another big test of my right foot, which had a bone spur removed in September. It was a real question mark whether I would be able to play drums this FAWM. Nice to see that I can! Bijou has added so much emotion and power to the instrumental that I sent. I am always floored by her diverse musical skills. Thank you once again, my friend, for writing with me once again. 🤗

Bijou: Thanks, Ze for this experience and for being a part of my journey. The words and vocals for this song were inspired by a past traumatic experience I had in therapy.

Lyrics

I am black and white
Fill a room with floodlight
Put my hands on the stove
So I don’t burn from the cold

This is miraculous work
Even God has a smirk
I tell you that just ain’t right
Throw up your hands in a fight

Yeah, you build up your walls
You watch me as I fall
And I beg for you to know
My head

Where were you when I was soft and healing?
My heart’s forever trapped inside this feeling
You pushed me in the deep end
I am reeling
Recollect the pain
I am concealing

I am not quite the same
For I am to blame
I saddled up for the ride
Followed your trail in the night

There is no way in or out
I created the drought
It lives real deep in your eyes
Look away from the sky

You can’t fill the void inside me
You say it so passionately
I just wanted you to take hold
Of my hand

Where were you when I was soft and healing?
My heart’s forever trapped inside this feeling
You pushed me in the deep end
I am reeling
Recollect the pain
I am concealing

I break away
And keep falling
I break away
And keep falling
I break away
And keep falling
Keep falling
Keep falling

Memory...

Mmm-mmm, that's a lovely lush intro kicking things off. I find that lilting 6/8 rhythm usually brings out uplifting songs (We are the Champions, Last Goodbye, that sort of thing), so it's cool to hear something a little more intense/dark. Such a lovely complete production in terms of the mix, arrangement, lyrics, melody.. all of it. Nothing I'd change even with a week in the studio!

Ooooh.....these lyrics and vocals have so much withheld anger that pairs absolutely perfectly with the music. I can hear deep emotions brewing very close to the surface in this. It is really moving actually.

Wow, emotive and inspiring stuff!
A real journey and glimpse into your experience. Your vocals soar through this effortlessly.
It's got some real Pink Floyd/70s flavours to it musically, superb and lush with loads of colours, very floaty indeed. Brilliant

This is so visceral and achingly beautiful! Lovely work guys!

I love the voice that you used for this! I’m no vocalist, but this makes the lyrics hit even harder. The layers of guitars and effects give this song so much depth and mood. Goodness it’s so nice to hear you guys collaborate again! Whoa, what a great song.

Another gem! This gives me Bond vibes. And I like the gritty direct vocals.
The overall mood is perfect

Fantastic top to bottom! The vocals are just soooo good. Cuts right to the heart. This is some of your best musical work, John! Excellent collaboration. Wow!!

Goood music, a strong lyric and a cool little vid, all topped off with that really engaging vocal. Nice one

This collab is so good! There’s a blonde redhead feel along with Julianna Hatfield… shit, it’s so damn effective.

Stunning track! Those drums sound magnificent and full-on studio quality, bass is rich and burnished, and the lovely panned guitars with that gorgeous reverse delay (who doesn't love some reverse delay?) all work perfectly together. And then you throw THAT vocal performance over it and things just soar. Kind of blown away by the combination of amazing lines like "even God has a smirk" and "I put my hands on the stove so I don't burn from the cold" with the nuance and emotional connection in your delivery. Wonderful build at the end too. Coming to the end of a second listen and it's giving me Jeff Buckley vibes. It's that good. Well done both of you.

Very cool atmosphere and story telling.

Wow, what an amazing song, this took me by surprise! Solid instrumentation and arrangement, and what amazing vocals... this one is special!

This is great! I'm so glad you two were able to collaborate again. This is awesome. I love the darker style to the vocals and the growls that are in there. Two insanely talented folks coming together to make something awesome. Great work you two!

Cool collab, like the rawness in the vocals, In my head I think I imagine @bijou sings in a higher register for some reason.. this has some early 90’s alternative rock vibes, thought of 10’000 Maniacs, Buffalo Tom and Marianne Faithful at various points throughout the song, but haven’t listened to any of them in since the 90’s….so probably not spot on.. like the swirly guitars

Such a great track! The jangly guitars work really beautifully to give that falling sensation, and the melody is killer. Really great collab work, y'all!
