This is my 13th FAWM. It's always wonderful and something I look forward to. It's the best part of Winter! (...the only good part of winter?) ;-)

I've been home-recording music for many years, with music that covers styles all over the map. I do a lot of instrumental music, since I don't write lyrics, so if you have an idea, let me know. I can't guarantee a collaboration will work out, but I usually do a lot of collaborating. I do collaborations as a co-writing project and consider them complete when I find the one that fits. I've had multiple versions of songs from various people, during FAWM, but the one that I end up posting is the official song, in my mind. I'm always finding amazing new people on FAWM!

I have used some MIDI keys the past few years, but most of the time, what you are hearing is me actually playing the instruments live, including drums, one track at a time. I write songs part by part and never quite know where they are headed, and very often get very deep in layers and atmospheres. I love painting with sound.

Check out my dad's (@srcoops) and younger brother's (@guatecoop) pages! @srcoops writes a ton of lyrics and we've collaborated on a lot of songs. He's very open to people using his lyrics, and had lots of collaborations last year, so let him know if you'd like to use them!! Also check out @kovbleu and @slawbleu - they are in Treading Bleu with my younger brother and me, as well as @gilhari who was in my college bands. :)

Oh, and I run this thing on FAWM called the 4-Track Challenge, where people mail cassettes to each other and add one track at a time. Sound fun? It is!! Let me know if you want in and check out the songs at @fourtracktape

@ayais
Thanks for your comments on Mother Nature's Kitchen/Aftermath. As a Fawmling I'm amazed that people listen to what I write, and I'm equally amazed that @audrey let me tack the lyric onto her fine piece.
[avatar]
Oh my gosh! You are right! Landscape view shows that tags for the song lists on my phone. Thanks!
[avatar]
I am missing a surf guitar song from my 2023 FAWM listeningโ€ฆ drop me a comment with the title if you have one this year. (Doing listening on my phone so it doesnโ€™t show the hashtags on the song list.) ๐Ÿ„โ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐ŸŽถ
[avatar]
thank you for your comments on cross-exchange. i knew it would be a difficult lyric to make sing, but brisk knew just where to go with it.
[avatar]
@leepat
Hey John, thx for listening! Definitely, let's do it next time. I'd love to get in on a surf number or trade musical ideas. Congrats on a great fawm yourself!
[avatar]
@pippa
Thanks, @zecoop for the Welsh song. Interesting and different in so many ways. And then I went to listen to @emkaydeebee and that was then another different rabbit hole! Pleased to meet you and your family. I'll follow you for next year. And I'll see if I can find more time for more listening.
[avatar]
@pippa
Thanks for listening to my tunes, ZeCoop. And for your comments. I'd be interested in listening to your song in Welsh. It is a strange language.
[avatar]
Im not home until about 16 April either!
[avatar]
About time you came on for Songwriters corner!'
[avatar]
So glad listening to Canyon added to your zen moment while sipping your select vintage wine. Seriously thanks for stopping by and having a listen glad you caught a good vibe @zecoop!!
[avatar]
Yeah, I received precious support from a few people, and this is the result.
I see you've been very prolific, as always! Congrats on another successful fawm! I'll be back to do some listening.
[avatar]
I forgot there was a fade out and in. I wonder if that was mechanical, like the head being lifted off the tape before switching. Really an awful format.
[avatar]
@beacon
@zecoop I just want to say thank you for all the support (here and on FB) that you've been recently. I look up to you so much, and to have you notice my efforts is meaningful to me. I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'd love to do a collab in the future. Not sure what that would be, but I guess we'd figure something out.
[avatar]
@piney
Hey Ze! Just wanted to tell you that I have listened to thee!! Youโ€™ve done a lot of work and collaborated with some fine peeps. Listening to your work is a wonderful treat. You are a multitalented prolific dude, and you can capture and embrace every single mood! There is still one day left and I bet you still have some for the end, and for some reason I want to quote the Golden Girls and say โ€œthank you for being a friendโ€.
[avatar]
Yes youโ€™re doing far better than most of us even with power. Well done.
[avatar]
FAWM mode activated ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
[avatar]
Thanks, and actually in listening to folksโ€™ instrumentals here I find it much easier to come up with melody ideas and much more freeing than doing it around chords Iโ€™m playing. Looking forward!
[avatar]
I would love to try that. I think lyrics are my strength, not so much melody and arrangement.
[avatar]
I'd love to collab some time! I'm very new to collabs (as you saw with "When You're Famous," thanks for watching) but enjoying figuring it out. No worries trying to squeeze it in this month. I'm sure I'll be back for 50/90 and next year!
[avatar]
Hi, @zecoop and thank you for your comments on my Squeaky Rocking Chair lyrics. To answer your question, Liz's interpretation was a fun surprise! She had originally thought she might use a different lyric. I loved this so much! I have bedtime lullaby music in the works for this song plus sketches for a book, so the peppy tune she came up with want on my radar. So clever! She also choose a different section for the chorus. I love it.
[avatar]
Awhh Zecoop, you flatter me way too much. I'm so happy you enjoyed Could You Be Me! Your comments just tickled me and I appreciate your words. yeah...I guess I've been doin' this for a while. Started at 14 and been around for a while...like a long, long while. :0)
[avatar]
hey! if you check the 4 track tape thread in the forum, you'll see there's a little problem with tape 19, one person couldn't record so the person in slot 4 is now slot 3, we'll need a slot four, if its not too late.. (see thread for more coherent detail, lol) anyway, thanks again for getting all this on track :)
and wow, you're having a great fawm there!
[avatar]
Hey Zecoop!
Thanks so much for your comments on my artists lament, Maybe Tomorrow. Yep...it ain't easy being us sometime. It also ain't easy being the person that has to live with us either! :0)) Thanks again for the listen.
[avatar]
Glad the tape showed up, sorry about the loss of power! There's no chart, but it's really just two sections. The verse is C#, D#m, F#, and the chorus is D#, A#, C# and G# I think
[avatar]
Hey, John - I'm so sorry for the friends you have lost to cancer and for your friend who is walking that path now. It's so hard. Thank you for listening to the song Rod built from my lyrics.
[avatar]
if you like my lyric feel free to give it a go
[avatar]
Thank you so much for the encouragement on my first skirmish!! Means a lot!
[avatar]
Yeah, I did 14 songs on the first day... it's good to get rid of the inner critic and it helps me from worrying about numbers! ๐Ÿ˜†

I'm going to keep an eye for any old phones, I want to make myself a mic like that too!
[avatar]
Hope you got my physical address. I sent an email.
[avatar]
Cheers for the encouraging feedback about my new demo โ€˜Itโ€™s Not Good Enoughโ€™, and great that you like the gear shift in the chorus! Iโ€™ve got stuck into song idea 3 now, so thatโ€™s almost an EP. ๐Ÿ˜…
[avatar]
@sollis
Thanks for checking out my makeshift 4-track recordings! I completely agree with you about the act of setting limitations. Sometimes we can have too many resources and not know what to do with them.

And I'd love to take part in your next 4-track challenge if I find myself with a cassette recorder by this time next year! Such a fun idea.
[avatar]
Hi zecoop my address is honeymoonhill@gmail.com. I will check - today Iโ€™ll be fawning all day so will make sure Iโ€™m on track with things. Regards to you and your family
[avatar]
@b3nut
Thank you for the kind comments on Pass This Way and Recombobulate Me!
[avatar]
Thank you for yoru beautiful comment on Letter to the Fallen, it means a lot.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for your support on "Like Thereโ€™s No Enemy in There" and my 14th song!
[avatar]
Thank you for you kind words John!! ๐ŸŽถ
[avatar]
Um, excuse me sir, but I'm going to have to request that you don't recommend amazing bands to me during FAWM, there is already too much great music here to go off and listen to a band from the 70's!

Seriously though, Renaissance is amazing, I'm going to have to dive into the music more after FAWM. I completely see the connection you are making as well, at least in the two and a half songs I've heard of theirs so far. I feel like their music is more to tell a story, and the song follows the story, instead of following a set pattern. And their stories happen to have similar musical ideas. Really glad you brought my attention to them, thanks again ๐Ÿ™‚

As for the techie side of things, I didn't actually write this with certain technical or theory ideas in mind. This one was largely with a certain... feeling and story in mind, and a lot of guessing and checking to find the right melodies and chords that fit that story. The original idea came from some random late night noodling I was doing on my acoustic guitar. The E section (where the guitar and viola trade leads) took a long time and many iterations, guessing and checking and scratch takes to just find the right transitions. I didn't have the lydian scale in mind at all during that, I just have the 'techie' side to help describe it after it was done!

I find theory knowledge can be really useful to help describe the music and communicate it to others, but... I find its rarely useful during the writing process. Sometimes to help with a random idea if I'm stuck or to help guide my ear in the right direction. But plenty of ways other than theory to do both of those.

Thanks again for the comment, and sorry for getting a bit carried away with the response ๐Ÿ˜…
[avatar]
Doesnโ€™t hurt to try. Send it on over, Iโ€™ll give it a go.
[avatar]
@mikeb
Thanks for the listen and comments on 'Xenon Headlights'!
[avatar]
I mean...you know I'd never say no to an assist from any willing bandmates! ;-)
[avatar]
๐Ÿ˜ŽCool having you check out "My One and Only." It was a good time for me putting that lyric together, and with @gordon 's fab connecting music and vocals to it, I'm thrilled that it was ear candy for you, Ze! Dug your insights and comment on the work, too. Thx!
[avatar]
@cts
Going out the door this weekend, sir! ๐Ÿ˜„
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your kind comments on "Devils on the Trampolines of Hell." One of the things I love about ukulele is that it can certainly be played in a complex way but you can also get away with very simple arrangements. :)
[avatar]
Thanks for commenting on my song "His Sun".
[avatar]
Thanks for the warm welcome and the comments! Means a lot to me. Helsinki has been nice in the summer when I've visited but I'm living some 700+km up north not too far from Lappland. But no reindeers around here :)
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your encouragement on โ€œTaken Aliveโ€ and โ€œHeโ€™s Hot For Her!โ€ My songs are getting less familiar to me the further we get into this month.
[avatar]
Thanks for not minding that I chopped up your drums! Thanks also for not pointing out that in chopping them up and re-organising them, I'd pretty created exactly what I started with, but with less useable section lengths! I'm such an idiot...
[avatar]
@tangle
That would be so fun! I can't make any promises because, aside from day 1, time has been super scarce on the creation side over here but I'm loving listening each night after the baby's asleep. I have something in my head that I hope to carve out time for this weekend that I can send you if and when it happens!
[avatar]
@erbaer
You can keep me in the loop. I'm getting another machine from another analog-a-phile this weekend.
[avatar]
Wow, thanks for the compliment!
[avatar]
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll try HB bass ๐Ÿ˜€
[avatar]
@seppo
Thanks dude from kind words :)
Summer in Finland, cabin by the lake, sauna, few beers and bunch of guys playing all night when the sun don't go down at all.
Bestness.
If you find yourself here, let's have coffee or beer ๐Ÿ˜„

@erbaer
My deck is a Fostex XR-3
[avatar]
Absolutely! Thank you, send it on over (email linked in my profile).
[avatar]
@erbaer
Well, I just went over this 4track and there's is not a 1X setting. I might be out.
[avatar]
@erbaer
Hey. What was the question about the 4track recording?
[avatar]
Hey, I see you use Harley Benton P-Bass in your tunes. Which model do you use, how is it? I'm looking for some affordable yet playable bass and see these 150 euro best sellerrs at the thomann web store. Just wondering if it's worth it to take one of these. Cheers!
[avatar]
Yeah, I knew going in that some people would try to turn it into a flame war, and the thread would get locked. I'm not upset with you for keeping an eye on it and keeping the forums a relatively civil place.

I already said what I needed to say. The only concern I have is that since I didn't approach the issue from the direction we usually see, there may yet be another such thread that the mods will have to watch like a hawk (I'm not going to start it though). However, you might consider extending the offer of your e-mail (or another contact) for further discussion to the Queer FAWMers thread, since I think some other people there may still have concerns that haven't been addressed.
[avatar]
Yay, I'm exciting!!! Not seeing it though -- I updated my FAWM email address, so if you sent it to the one you've used before, I probably won't get it! If you could resend to the address in my FAWM profile, that would be awesome. Thank you!! Excited to hear it!!
[avatar]
@n1742
Hi zecoop. Will try to use one of your drum tracks again if thatโ€™s ok with you. Hoping to put some sax and trombone like one we did previously. Hope you are all doing fine.
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks a lot! Sounds like something I should try out :D
[avatar]
Love to hear that I inspired anything. Haha need any heavy music compadre, be sure to give me a shout.
[avatar]
Thank you for reminding me! Gonna happen.
[avatar]
Greetings. I'm lurking and following this year.
[avatar]
Tape went in the mail this afternoon for mr. @burrsettles.
Good luck. My bridge is a hot garbage fire of chord changes that I didn't really map out very well.

Thank you very much for your kind words, and sorry about Slack: I indeed didn't log in for a long time, but I'm back. Hope we can chat one of these days.
It's good to see you, I wish you a wonderful FAWM.
[avatar]
@chroes
Hey again, I just wanted to say thank you for your encouragement over on Mastodon - and your super kind comment on "Mars"!
[avatar]
Hey bud. (Finally getting a chance to say hi.)
[avatar]
I need an address for @dugganensis to send Tape 8 off. I think you have my email address from last year. If not Rob has it.
[avatar]
Thank you (and so many FAWMers) for the kind words and useful advice. You ROCK!
[avatar]
@bee
Hey, Zecoop! I keep seeing your name pop up as a collaborator and wanted to follow the fun on your profile. Excited to hear you tunes!
[avatar]
Welcome back and happy FAWM! Thanks for all you do around here, expecially organizing the #4_track challenge! ๐Ÿ˜
[avatar]
@clioem
To quote Worf: it is a glorious drumkit, worthy of the greatest hall of warriors!
Love it, wish I had one! I think the lovely neighbours are already very tolerant of our opera singing, guitaring, synthing, nighttime gaming and now Netflix binge-watching, so I hesitate to add it. We do bang on a colombian drum sometimes.
I will live vicariously through your percussion lines.
[avatar]
@clioem
Thank you for the kind comment!
[avatar]
Same to you buddy! Looking forward to hearing some cool stuff from you this month. Quite like the idea of writing something around some drum loops if you wanted to send me a couple of clips for a collab?
[avatar]
Hi John! Thanks for the lovely note! Yes! We should catch up. Sooooo looking for are to hearing all the coop fam goodness this year. Your work is so inspirational. Hopefully I can catch a song or two this year :) Iโ€™ll keep my ears peeled for you!
[avatar]
Hey @zecoop, I used one of your drum loops last year to write 'Righteous Sound'.
We re-recorded it as a band in a studio and here it is on spotify:

[avatar]
Am super excited about FAWM and Looking forward to hearing your work!!

Ahhh thanks for pinging me. I think I'm gonna see how my first two tapes go before I overextend myself (already!? It's not even February yet. Good grief)
[avatar]
@cts
The Jelly Factory will be open for business, sir!
[avatar]
Ha!! โ€ฆ.sorry about thatโ€ฆ.. Now that I canโ€™t flick the ears of kids riding on school buses anymore, I have to find other ways to be annoying๐Ÿ˜
[avatar]
Hi Zecoop! Looking forward for your new tunes. Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Hey hey! Welcome back. Let's come up with some great music!

Hey John - hope you and the family are well! looking forward to Wednesday and some 4-track magic!
[avatar]
Thank you and welcome back! This will probably be a light participation year for me, but I look forward to getting more listening in. I can't wait to see (hear?) what you create! Thanks for having my back. :)

I can type some more if youโ€™d liked:

Pickle, gem, water ballon, outer space, mosquito, pumpkin, whisk, muscles
[avatar]
@piney
Hi Ze! I am wishing you a happy and fun FAWM!!
[avatar]
@chroes
Totally fine. It was important for me to bring this topic up. I'd be willing to help with the conceptual stuff, but I don't really think you (as a group of coders, admins and mods) need another voice in the choir.
Thank you for being a considerate and understanding person!
[avatar]
Yo Yo Yo! Almost time to go!
[avatar]
Hello there!
[avatar]
@erbaer
Yes. I have a tape that is 3 tracks in. Where can I send it? I somehow lost the information when the FAWM door closed.
[avatar]
HAPPY FAWM John!!!
[avatar]
Helloooooooo! :D
[avatar]
Thank you for moderating! Hopefully you have time for some collabs
[avatar]
@clioem
Hi hi! I might change my mind by FAWM (going to restring the ukes soon) but in the meantime, I am thinking synthpop. Listened to a lot of Agnes Obel today though, and it reminded me of my former witchy impulses that were never fully explored... let's see!
[avatar]
@tan482
Happy FAWM! Canโ€™t wait to hear what you create this year :-)
[avatar]
Heya, not this time I'm afraid. Hopefully next year. Have a great FAWM!
[avatar]
Thanks for reminding me to come back here!
[avatar]
@b3nut
Good to see you again! Totally up for collab... :)
[avatar]
For SURE I'll need a four track brush up soon. Maybe Saturday?
[avatar]
@sph
Hi there, have a nice FAWM
[avatar]
Awesome! I'll eagerly await whatever you'd send me.
[avatar]
Hi John, yes it would be in the four track challenge. Iโ€™ll record onto track one, and send it on.
[avatar]
Happy FAWM, John!!
[avatar]
Hi John. Thank you for your kind note. Looking forward to your amazing music.
[avatar]
Yay! Happy FAWMing to you!
[avatar]
Hi John, I hope you have a great FAWM.

I would love to record something onto a tape cassette on day one and send it your way?
[avatar]
@mikeb
Happy FAWM 2023!

@fuzzy
Hey, it's my 13th FAWM too!
Doesn't seem like it's been that long, right?
I'm looking forward to hearing what you come up with this February!
[avatar]
Am super looking forward to FAWMing with you this year, last year was SO HARD. You are such a glowing force of goodness in my life and a rock in my FAWM.

Thanks for the kind welcome. And thank you for being one of the super friendly moderators on FAWM. Have fun this year. Greetings to all Coops.
[avatar]
Hey Zecoop! Thank you for all the mod assistance! Have a great FAWM!
[avatar]
I do love the Stylophone....... and to see how bad I can massacre your drum tracks ๐Ÿคฃ...... I got sooooo off track having fun last year, I ended up with only two sound tracks for my videos....... No fun this year!!!!! (.....although I did bring the jew's harp..... ๐Ÿ˜€)
[avatar]
Thank you! Glad to be here. Hope you have a great FAWM!
[avatar]
Ha!!! It might not be musical..... but it will be madness ๐Ÿ˜€
[avatar]
Yes, I'm looking forward to the winter writing hibernation again. Things are good over here. The sun came out TWICE last week, haha.
[avatar]
just posted on the 4 track thread (signed up for tape number nine, number nine, number nine, track two (the tape that swampjaw is starting)
[avatar]
Thanks, zecooperdooper! (Tips official hat backatcha.)
[avatar]
Hey, thanks, and welcome back. Canโ€™t wait to hear what the muse brings us this go around.
[avatar]
Same here! Always something. This year it's care taking a sick parent recovering from Covid, and also on a work project in Boise so we might be rocking a cracked Martin and good old fashioned iPhone recordings! Surely the wife has tuned you out by now, eh? LOL. Maybe we can do some kind of collab this year!
[avatar]
@beacon
Getting ready for an epic February! Interested to see what 4 track goodness you come up with!

BTW, I'm just listening to your 2022 FAWM album. It slaps! Damn! #goals
[avatar]
Hey John! Official hello right backatcha! Happy FAWMing!
[avatar]
It's the most wonderful time of the year! Happy FAWM, friend.
[avatar]
thanks, and yes, would love to do another four track project!
[avatar]
Hey John! Always good to hear from you! Hope you're doing well. Life is crazy on my end, honestly no idea how much I'll be able to participate but FAWM dies hard so I hope to write a couple things at least!
[avatar]
Hi, John!!! Aww, you always have such kind things to say, thank you!! But rather than being a light, I think of myself as being more of a moon that reflects the dazzling light of the sun - the sun in this case being the rest of you - without which there would be no light to reflect! :)
[avatar]
Hey neighbor! How's it out on the westside? Looking forward to a FAWM again, you always find a way to create a highlight for me. Let's do this.
[avatar]
GLORIOUS DISASTER 4EVER
[avatar]
Looking forward to enjoying your prolific FAWM output (and hopefully some drum tracks to inspire us) again this year.
[avatar]
Seems silly to wish you a happy FAWM since we've already been chatting via FB Messenger and email, but now it's officialโ€” HAPPY FAWM :D
[avatar]
Hey hey hey! Happy new FAWM ๐Ÿค˜
[avatar]
@nadine
Welcome back! Happy FAWM!
