Liner Notes

Okay, this was a fun #skirmish! Once again, the idea for the chorus popped into my head immediately upon seeing the prompt (so I decided to go for it even though I'm technically working right now lol).

The first take I tried recording, Nova (my husky mix) decided she wanted to sing along. "Call Me (Nova's Version)" can be found here: https://accidentalfudgehome.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/callmenovasversion-alyxanderjames.mp3. It's very silly.

Lyrics

You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)

You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)

I am who I say I am
You can't know me the way I can
I am who I say I am
I am who I say I am

You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)

You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)

I am who I say I am
You can't know me the way I can
I am who I say I am
I am who I say I am

You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)

You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)
You don't get to choose what to call me (call me)

I like this. It's here with the tiniest instrument, but somehow it would work as a massive disco banger.

I just loved "Nova's Version!' Not that yours wasn't great, but something about Nova's reactions just put me in stitches. She's a secret weapon and you should use her again! 😀

@heid
Ooh, a rare and special combo of uptempo and meditative! Your voice sounds great at both ende of the range in this song.

OK, listened to Nova's version. I will say that Zoë, the canine in my house, prefers that one . . . (I kinda like it too!)

Yes!!!! This is so catchy (and the (call me) really makes it work). And then the B part over the same rhythm is very cool. (I also like the rhyme in the B part). No I need to go listen to Nova's version . . .

This is really catchy and I can hear both parts in my head. Very relevant and powerful stuff

Yup good song, I like the repetition and the words are spot on! Be a great opening set song!

I like it! An anthem for knowing what you stand for.

I love the sentiment, and the execution is perfect! We are who we say we are. At least for the moment...

I love this! Sometimes it’s sets of just a few lyrics that are the most powerful. I love how these two sections work off of each other.

Delicately powerful, @alyxanderjames . Interesting repetition prods just right as it hooks, reveals, and delivers. Nice uke and vocal mix. Great tone, play, and cadence!

Love this repetition and the rhythm of this, such a sweet voice over the uke and the message is strong and beautifully put across. Very nice

Oh man.
The whole time listening to this, I was overlaying memories of youth worship nights obsessively singing about how I didn't belong to myself and replacing those songs with this message.
I want to hear this done with tons of people and improvised harmonies♥️♥️♥️♥️

I like the suggestion of a call and response motion throughout with the tension of that pulse on the uke. Good write 😊
