Liner Notes

Earlier today @orinthebard posted "Never Aphrodite" (https://write.fawm.org/songs/304768), and I got the first couple of lines of this song in my head after listening to that. The rest just sort of fell out of me from there. Played on my baritone-tuned tenor ukulele in honor of World Ukulele Day.

Lyrics

What does it mean to be beautiful
What does it mean to be ugly
Is it innate
Or all in the eyes of beholders

I don't wanna be perceived
By people who refuse to see the whole of me
I don't wanna be perceived
By people who refuse to see the whole of me

What does it mean to fit in
What does it mean to be different
Is it just fate
Or does it depend on the context

I don't wanna be perceived
By people who refuse to see the whole of me
I don't wanna be perceived
By people who refuse to see the whole of me

I will do my best to see you truly
If you'll do your best to see me, too
We are real, either way
No matter what those fuckers say

I don't wanna be perceived
By people who refuse to see the whole of me
I don't wanna be perceived
By people who refuse to see the whole of me
See the whole of me

Such a powerful song. The calm delivery makes these lyrics that much more impactful. The chorus is truly an anthem, and so catchy - had me joining in by the end. Thanks for sharing this - it is heartbreaking and beautiful.

Such an important and timely song. No one wants to be invisible or in some dimension that is not fully who they are. This song could speak to so many who feel marginalized or erased or unseen…. The melody is really lovely. This song reaches in deep to my heart, especially as I think about my trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, two spirit, agender, and gender expansive friends and patients who are feeling further marginalized by the disturbing words and actions coming from our leaders. This song speaks volumes so beautifully. I wish more people could hear it, not just listen to it, but truly hear it.

I love this so much!!Amen! I ask myself all these questions, and opening with a question is so strong, lyrically. The picking on the Uke is beautiful and it is sung so expressively.

This is an anthem for us all. A very singable chorus too. Beautiful work!

These lyrics hit hard and speak to me on a different level. I often wish people were less superficial. The stripped back arrangement is a good choice for the vocals. Good chorus melody.

Great song. The gentle vocal is so inviting and authentic. The chorus is quite awesome both melodically and lyrically. I find myself singing along. The simple arrangement of your voice and uke is really enough.

@bee
Really beautiful chorus melody! Very reflective and great for a group singalong. Maybe next year at song school???

Such a beautiful, delicate composition. I greatly enjoyed it (no matter what those fuckers say!) and I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of your tunes!

Great song, great touching lyrics...
I think the meaning of the lyrics is independant upon gender and preference,
it's being human...
but then, I'm an old straight boomer so what do I know 😀

Aw geez. So many feels. You did so much with simple language and a seriously good chorus. I wish I could make songs work without depending so much on complicated lyrics. I admire that here, as well as your openness. The vocal is incredibly touching.

This is just wonderful! Your voice gives me a warm glow inside and the lyrics are so on point. Anthem for sure.

HOLY FUCK THIS CHORUS IS GOOD. Queer, neurodivergent anthem territory, for real.

"We are real, either way
No matter what those fuckers say"

That part! Amen to that! Great song. Beautifully performed, I always like your gentle but firm approach.

This is a beautiful response, omg. It puts words to something I wasn't able to voice all the way in my song. Thank you for your gentle lyrics & strums
[avatar]
Amen my friend whatever you are, it is the whole package! Nicely said and done!

Oh, Alyx. This chorus. What a song. What a statement. Thank you.

Great chorus, and cool tag at the end to bring it home.
Favorite line: "We are real, either way / No matter what those fuckers say"

Another lovely plucked uke entry, sets the tone right for the questioning starting first verse. And carries through the chorus too. The melancholic feel and lack of aggression ino the singing line is good--me, I'd start ranting the lyrics angrily--and defeat the point! And the chorus is an earworm dammit!

That opening line is evocative -- and then gets complicated by the second line. The chorus is fantastic -- love what you do melodically and rhythmically and, of course, the bigger point. (honestly, I'm going to be walking around singing that chorus all day. it's just beautiful.)

this is really pretty, and that chorus hook is really catchy, the sort of thing you can imagine as a crowd singalong. Really liked this

Another beauty! I listened to this one while winding down for the night doing self care. Soothing and singalong.

This is smart and true. I really like this Alyx. The chorus melody is very singalongable- gonna have that melody in my head tomorrow, hopefully prompting me to look past the facade of my colleagues and make more genuine connection. Agree with @sapient - there's something anthemic here.

Ah, that 5th stanza. Sums it up perfectly. People are not their cheekbones or their clothes. There's a whole lot to each of us, and this is such a strong anthem for us all doing our best every day to recognise that. 🤩
