Liner Notes

Wooooooo!!!!!! Happy FAWM everyone! Here's my instrumental surf(ish) opener. I did have the Surfybear reverb unit set pretty high on the guitars, so that counts! It might not be classic surf (or maybe it is) but it's fun and made me happy, so mission accomplished.

I live not that far from Lake Michigan, which is the second largest of the Great Lakes. They are huge, if you are not familiar. In the winter, Lake Michigan freezes over (usually) and you end up getting these really big, crusty ice layers. They are fun to look at and people go out on them every year (which can be really dangerous).

Here's what I used (so that I can remember):
SX Liquid (3 P90's) into a 1973 Traynor YGL-3
Eastman Surfcaster into the same amp
Fender Jazz bass into a SansAmp bass driver
My 1970's GEM Sprinter 49 Combo-organ
1973 Ludwig Hollywood drum kit
Egg and medium shakers
Tambourine

Super fun and groovy! I really like those 70’s drum fills. I wish it was surf weather in upstate NY… I guess that’s the point of the title ehh🤣

Is FAWM really real if Zecoop doesn't kick things off with a bit of surf rock? Gaaah, everything sounds so *real*, I'm jealous. The 'Can You Feel It' progression in the chorus (?) is a delight, positively euphoric!

I’ve just googled these icy lakes dangers and seen an infographic ‘the dangers of shelf ice’ which has just put the fear of god into me 😅 Shall not be walking on any of your Great Lakes! Anyway, this awesome track has all the warmth to melt away these ice dangers! What an opener 😁

Yes! 🏄❄️ Nice work. Always love the surf grooves. Love the way the progression and dynamics flow and build.

Hanging 10 listening to this and love it! Well done.

Nice production on this! C’mon someone out there has to add some lyrics!!! I think Duane Eddie would say - not enough reverb… 😉

You can’t surf
On Lake Mi-chi-gan

Ah yeah, this is breezy and cruising. I’m not thinking about the winter in this though….nope. The combination of combo organ and the guitar (REVERB!) is great. You almost always start with a fun surf song and I just love it. You should really do videos for them! A March project….very well done!

Banging sounds, love that ascending chord progression too, that's a nice break. That organ rocks too!
[avatar]
The Polar Bear group should play this as they dive in at the open water amidst the ice. Nice one.
[avatar]
And I'd know that GEM organ a mile away! LOL
[avatar]
Ahhhh, it's the reliably awesome surf-rock opener!! OK, maybe it's not "traditional" surf, but I think it still captures the sound and feel. Everything sounds fantastic, my friend!
[avatar]
Ooh this is so fun! Love that I can look forward to these at the start of every February. :-D I definitely get surfy vibes from this and, as others have said, a bit of slant-surf works nicely for this winter version! Got my head bopping nicely -- great start to FAWM!

Love it! Definitely sounds like ice – and surfing – to me. What a great start.

The organ is my favorite part here. Something about it ties everything together here for me. Not "classic surf" music, but, speaking as a non-surfer, I feel like one could still bast this at the beach and go surfing.
[avatar]
I was waiting for this!! Don't worry so much about the classification. I like that it's a little more awakened - plus, as a denizen of the Fourth Coast, who says you need to be locked into "traditional" coastal surf vibes?

The ascending C-D-E progression kicks in at a great time.

Excellent surf vibe.

oh man - this rawks, so glad @zecoop is in the house
and analogue out the wazoo

OOOOO yes John. I always look forward to your surf rock and this is no exception but this has something more, and then something more,. the chord movements in the verse to the uplifting blast of a chorus, really floated my boat, and then the ending masterful. Hmmmmm you really do push my musical sync bone you know. FAB STUFF
[avatar]
I like this variation of a surf rock song you have created. It really does remind me of the crusty ice on water. This song could be what the ice screams out when we step on them. hehe
[avatar]
This is a great surf tune. I think for me the key element (aside from the awesome reverb) is the organ. The other elements are also great, but when the organ is playing it brings the whole thing past the finish line. Great work and a fantastic start to FAWM 2025.

Cool icey surf sound! What kind of chords are these? They sound very interesting. Is that an organ or a harmonica? Good choice here.
[avatar]
This captures the essence of winter surf perfectly. The grooves are fun and bouncy, and that guitar sound has a brittleness to it that belies the icy theme.

SURFIN MUSIC IN FEB..warms my heart.....
[avatar]
Great song! It has the vibe to me of knowing you have a day ahead of you doing the things you want to do the most. The icy melody has a warmth to it.
[avatar]
I like these! I do a few myself but you get much more variety! A beach song can lift a cold day for sure, hope this does for you cold season people,

Now FAWM is officially live. I love the combo organ. Lushous reverb. Great instrumental surf opener.
[avatar]
Nice start as always. Midwest surf vibe with an icy feel. The organ adds a nice, cool vibe. Great track!
[avatar]
This makes me wonder how you'd ice surf. Though it could make for a cool sledding montage. Wipeouts and all. Great use of panning. Made me feel like I was in the middle of the studio session surrounded by a wall of musicians. Love that reverb. Great way to kick off FAWM.
[avatar]
Ooh yeah, the combo organ is a nice touch! Love the walk-up section, that's cool. Lots of fun surfy vibes as usual... I guess in your case, people would be ice surfing. 😆

This feels appropriately Midwest surf to me! :D Super fun track!
