Liner Notes

I promised some chugga-chugga, so here’s some to get going with.

It's entirely possible that there is some meaning in there relevant to current events.
Or not.
I leave it to you to decide, as I honestly wrote these words pretty much on the fly...

#metal #blackmetal

Lyrics

Husk of life
An omen of suffocation
Appeasement matters not
Worship is void
Callous are the hands
Veiled are the eyes
Unknowing
Unheeded
Unseen

Break ground
On the heretic’s path
Lore bound
To primordial truths
Burn past
The codex of lies
Hold fast
Arise from the Abzu

Wrecked hearts
A sigil of banishment
Abjuration matters not
The void is within
Severed are the hands
Burnt are the eyes
Afflicted
Accursed
Alive

Break ground
On the heretic’s path
Lore bound
To primordial truths
Burn past
The codex of lies
Hold fast
Arise from the Abzu

oof the 'break ground..' palm muted bit is so cool, bit of a contrast and very rhythmic and hooky in a way. Oh yes that solo, especially when the duel guitars come in!

Ah, the Abzu.
Is that chair from IKEA?

Excellent stuff! I'm generally not a huge black metal fan but this is really enjoyable. Love the extremely ominous intro. Great riffage, nice changeup with the rhythms of the B section (chorus?). Great moody bridge, nice solo harmonies. Will check out all your other stuff!
[avatar]
Such a cool intro and awesome riffs! Clean mix too, especially given the chunky sounds coming out here, it's like someone gave Hetfield an 8-string. Very nicely done :)
[avatar]
The intro is like all the doors closing in the face of society's "others" as Elon Musk loads all his friends onto a rocket to go inhabit (and destroy) the next world. Also, you taught me a new word: abjuration. I suspect it will creep up again in the coming years, haha, ugh. I like the vocal rhythm of the chorus and how there's a demon hypeman adding higher back-up vocals.
[avatar]
That scary intro before it all goes superpowered awesomesauce! 😻
And it's not just heavy, it's clever, and it's addictive thanks to the many many sonic and rhythmic riches it contains. Incredible, LOVE IT!
[avatar]
holy macaroni! What a beast, that blast beat rules. The chugga-chugga stuff is great, but the A part is my favourite. That growl in your voice is so cool.
[avatar]
great sound, clean mix. I like how clear all the instruments are. I normally don't listen to this genre, but it sounds super clean and clear which makes it pleasant and interesting to listen to. The drums are incredible. The guitar solo is beautiful. I really like your mix. And I also read in the forums that you use cubase, and read some of your tips, so I came to listen to your song, and I can imagine those channels and the work you did, enjoyed listening, congrats on your first song.
[avatar]
The dissonant build turned me on. The blast beats made my head feel like it was in a washing machine. The solo made me see God, or Steve Vai. You take me all the places, Pete.
[avatar]
GWAHHHHHHHH. This song not only got me all revved up, it cured my sinus headache and cleared up my eczema. Bless you, sir, in the name of the Unholy Things.
[avatar]
Chugga chugga right along. This one rips. Fantastic guitar solo. Love all the changes
[avatar]
Pretty much everything in this one. Intense. Great hooks. Enjoyed harmonized guitars towards the end. All-round epic. My head didn't quite explode but it came close. Off to a fine start, sir.
[avatar]
Love the change up at 1:45. There's so many things that I like here. Definitely have my death metal fix for day one. Great drums, guitar, and vocals. Very nice!
[avatar]
Cool opening! I like the idea of using percussive rises as an element in their own right rather than sweetening transitions between sections. They work really well and ratchet up the tension. The unexpected literal "chef's kiss" made me laugh, and it's perfectly placed.

And then the fun really begins... This definitely brings the chugga-chugga to the party in a big way. Those low strings REALLY add meat to the riffage. Cracking solo, too - wow, this is really top-level stuff!

I approve very much. Was there ever any doubt?
[avatar]
Holy moly, this was a journey! What a fantastic song, it took me all over the place!
[avatar]
Loving the vocals and the lyrics. It's probably because of the title, but your voice at parts made think the one of Proscriptor McGovern, hahah! The groovy bits are
great, and that lead part is damn MAJESTIC. Grim ave!
[avatar]
Oh shit. Going hard out of the gate, this is great and actually pretty inspirational. Let's go!
[avatar]
I love this into. I love the solo. I love the heavy parts. What a brilliant start to FAWM in these dark days. Please let me know when you publish this, I'm all in for that! 😍
[avatar]
yay first song posted, first i am listening to. Epic stuff I agree about that groove at 1.45! Pleasure to hear you back and leading the way into FAWM 2025!
[avatar]
Killer guitars and snare sound! Rock on, dude!
[avatar]
Pretty intense! The intro makes me think something loud and fast is going to hit me, and I that expectation was met and exceeded. What I really like though is the outro second half after 3 minutes - wow! This is a great blend of more traditional black metal and more melodic types of metal/rock.
[avatar]
This is delicious, and now I am properly awake! :D
[avatar]
Whoa - blown away
[avatar]
This starts out like a movie trailer, I didn't know what to expect. Good tension building. The 'break ground' bit reminds me of Bodies. And overall the style you've gone for reminds me of Burzum ( I think it's the guy called Varg, unfortunately not 100% if that's who they're called, but I do like that style ). A well constructed piece for the first lot of the challenge. Youve got s good quality here. Nice soloing with the unite of those wailing guitar leads.
[avatar]
Holy shit those opening percussive blasts are so... heavy. Then Then arpeggios fade in, take a breath, and: all hell breaks loose. How do you talk after singing like that?? The change up for the chorus is nice, I dig that groove a lot. This goes hard as hell, and I dig the lyrics, whatever they may mean.
[avatar]
Ha ha glad I had my phones on as it’s pretty late here. Glad to hear the chug is back! The instrumentation is spot on!
[avatar]
Congrats on the first submission. Black metal is not really my thing but the section at 3:30 is brilliant contrast and nicely written. And that groove from 1:45 got me headbanging like crazy.
[avatar]
that intro promises a lot and you deliver even more, it reminds me of the movie alien, with its science fiction opening that rapidly evolves into a horror film. a spectacular track,
[avatar]
Well, it's telling that given the state of our world, we need this sort of track to start it off. Great production here, and we will all be better if we just live in Lord Sapient's world. Black but benevolent. Great guitar solo!
[avatar]
What a track for the first listen of the year! Black is not the type of metal I often listen to, but the contrast between different parts simply works. The thing around 4 minutes sounds awesome.
[avatar]
YESSSS 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
[avatar]
Well you have to listen and review the FIRST song don't you? This song id definitely a journey my ears are bleeding but then that is probably the intention. Mission accomplished.
[avatar]
Serious question.. HOW is that record not spinning off the turntable from the centrifugal force of this?? Ooh this 3:30 chill out sesh is BEAUTIFUL! Ok getting raspyyyyy again yassss! Is this about the game Abzu, then? Not played it myself. Regardless, this is awesome quality, will never fathom your skills but especially how you use them so quickly together to form such awesomeness! Will defs listen to this in the gym later!
[avatar]
First metal song of this year's FAWM. Really atmospheric intro and love the sudden shift then into the full on death metal growly vibe. The lyrics are cool as well
[avatar]
I LOVE the intro easing me into waking this morning but I NEED the chugga-chugga to wake me up and get me going. The melodic solo is another dynamic shift that works very well for me. I love it when it gets to the harmonized part. The short lines in the lyric works so damn well both alone and paired with the music. I especially like the first verse/stanza. Great wake up song. Thank you.
[avatar]
The first song I'm listening to this FAWM (and perhaps the first one posted, if I read the site correctly) and it's a hella banger! This is the kind of energy I'm looking to bring in my own submissions. Kudos to you, sir, this is awesome stuff!
[avatar]
How about that, the first posted song of this year is black metal. I've listened my fair share of bm but it's a really black and white genre, (sorry for the pun) when it comes to crossing paths with death metal riffs and stuff. But seems like a nice mix of different sub-genres and how it sounds. Pretty modern guitar and bass tones and the snares sounds better on faster beats that I'm used to get out of programmed drums. Great vocals too.
[avatar]
Wow, that is some good death metal! Not really my style of music, but you made me listen to the end, so I guess that is a good sign 😀
[avatar]
Good god that sounds immense, really spacious for death metal. Nice one!
[avatar]
To be fair, it was a good 50 seconds in before I thought, oooh me ears, help! A wall of wonderful pain neighbour. More like this please
[avatar]
Choo-choo! You did it again!
